John Boothway/Boothaway/Boothyway bapt/Parents?
« on: Sunday 17 December 17 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Havnt been able to find a bapt for my 6th grt grandfather.
The surname isn’t a common one and I’ve seen a few Boothways in Langtons, leic but not sure of a connection.

My 6th grt grandfather John Boothway married Elizabeth Burdett 3 Aug 1789 Wistow, Leicestershire. Both listed of the parish.

Of John and Elizabeth’s children’s baptisms the surname is listed as Boothway/Boothyway/Buthaway.

Any help would be appreciated.

To save people having to duplicate searches it helps if you provide an approximate year of birth, plus the names of children.  Any other information you have, such as occupation, witnesses to the marriage etc can also help.

From his burial in 1830 it seems that John was born c1770 and his children were (in order) William, John, Timothy, Mary, Abigail, Thomas, Sarah & Eizabeth.

Marriage witnesses were George Siddams(?) & Thos Weston.

Have you ruled out the John Boothway baptised Swineshead, Lincolnshire 10 Apr 1768 to William & Mary?

Sorry, I forgot to list his birthdate from burial.

I have seen the bapt in Lincolnshire but there is also a burial in Boston, Lincolnshire 1848 so I need to see if this fits with that John born Swineshead or not.

My 5th grt grandmother was Abigail Boothway bapt 21 Feb 1803 Wistow, Leicestershire. Parents John and Elizabeth.
She married Charles Coleman 29 Aug 1825 Wistow. Both listed of Newton Harcourt.

A Thomas Boothaway marries Elizabeth King 5 Apr 1824 Wistow. Both listed of Newton Harcourt.
Abigail Boothaway is a Witness.

A William Boothaway marries Alice Cook 25 Dec 1822 Wistow. Both listed of Newton Harcourt.

I think these are 2 sons of John and Elizabeth and there are 3 daughters Ann,Mary and Sarah Boothaway who marry in Newton Harcourt.

I don't know if this helps or hinders. I have a copy of a removal order for a Timothy Boothway, dated 3rd January 1818. The Churchwardens of Newton Harcourt complained to Thurcaston parish that he had intruded and become chargeable to the parish, and demanded that some in Thurcaston come and fetch him back. It was found that his legal place of settlement was Thurcaston. I never found his birth or baptism.
However; in 1815, Mary Roe, singlewoman, gave birth to a boy, baptised at Thurcaston as Timothy Roe. She was 'on the parish'. In 1819, she married Timothy Boothway, and she was pregnant when he fell ill and died in 1821.
How he came to be a resident of Thurcaston i don't know, but I suspect he skipped to Newton Harcourt to avoid responsibility for Mary and her child, and possibly because he had relatives there to shelter him.
Sorry I can't help further, he was incidental because I was researching the Roes and Mary was possibly a relative.

Hi
Hmm thats interesting.
Given his age on burial it seems he could be a son of John and Elizabeth. The name seems to have been listed a number of ways Boothway/Boothaway/Boothyway/Buthaway.

Edit*
I’ve found Timothy’s baptism, it seems he was a son of John and Elizabeth and could explain why he went to Newton Harcourt.

Timothy Boothyway
Bapt 19 Oct 1794 Wistow, Leicestershire.
Parents: John and Elizabeth.

Interestingly on his marriage to Mary it looks like the A or Y in Boothaway/Boothyway was marked out so it spelt Boothway. Correction by the clerk?

Thank you for this, that seems to give more credit to the bapt in Lincolnshire for John as Boothway isn’t exactly a common name.
