Map help please Tillyduff, St Fergus pre 1891
« on: Sunday 17 December 17 17:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I've found an entry on genuki saying that Tillyduff can be found at map ref NK065558 on OS Landranger sheet 30. I've been on the NLS map site, but I'm not finding it easy to work out where I type in that reference.  Please can someone assist me. Thanks.

This is it http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=57.5932&lon=-1.8954&layers=5&b=1 but on the First Edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map rather than on the Landranger, which isn't available on the NLS map site.

To find the way yourself go to http://maps.nls.uk/
Click on Ordnance Survey Maps
Click on Ordnance Survey, Six-inch to the mile, 1st edition - 1843-1882 - 2,123 sheets
Click on As a seamless zoomable overlay layer on modern Google and OS maps
Type NK065558 in the box at top left labelled Gazetteer / NG Ref:
Hit 'Enter' and it will take you to that grid reference.

To see it on a modern map (Landranger/Explorer etc) go to http://www.geograph.org.uk/
Type NK065558 in the search box
Hit 'Enter' and it will take you to an extract from the Landranger.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
