Looking for James Jeremiah Harrington
« on: Monday 18 December 17 08:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am looking for more details on my paternal grandfather James Jeremiah Harrington. According to what info I could find he emigrated to South Africa from Country Cork but I have no dates on this. Here he married a Sarah Magdalena Noortman and their son was John Garret Harrington who was born in 1902 in SA. He went on to marry a Christina Stella De Klerk and My father Nico Peter Harrington was the second last child from this marraige before her death in 1953. So far some community members have managed to find some info on her but not much on my grandfather. I attached her death notice as FYI if it will help.

Anything would help as I am trying to find the birth dates of my Great grandfather or any records of his existence in Ireland before he emigrated to SA.

thank you!
HARRINGTON, LATEGAN, Geel, De klerk, Barriss, Rutherfoord-jones.

Hi

Here is a link to his Death Notice in 1906

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS4F-N33Y-1?i=495&cat=128171

The document lists all of their children eldest born in 1885 so presumably the married c 1884 in Mafekeng.
Also lists his parents first names
Regards
Gillian

Thee are copies of Cape Marriages here
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/244034?availability=Family%20History%20Library
You could try paging through 1884 to see if you can find his marriage - I can't find an index for 1884 so I am afraid it is the long hand method.

Hi, have a look at http://www.eggsa.org/cgi-bin/doshowContext.pl and search for Harrington.  There is a Mr Harrington that arrives on board the "Tartar" Feb 1884.

Hi! Thank you so much for this. This could have been him:

HARRINGTON, Mr. J.
Sailed from: Southampton
Destination: Natal
on the passenger list of the U.S.S. Co's S.S. PRETORIA,
departing from Southampton on 27 Jan 1881,
bound for Cape Town, Algoa Bay, East London, Natal,
Source: British Mail 01 Apr 1881
transcribed by: Trisha McLeod.

He would have been 29 if this was the case a bit old but still plausible as his first child was born only in 1885
