Dutch Ancestry
« on: Tuesday 19 December 17 15:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am researching the family history for a friends husband. His great, great Granddad, was; Nicholas Olie, who was born around; 1840ish in; Amsterdam. I have found Nicholas from the; 1891 Census in; Monkwearmouth, Durham, but can't find him before then. I can't even find the marriage record between him and his wife; Elizabeth, who was born around; 1847, Monkwearmouth, Durham. Any help would be great please, as i'm really not sure how to go about a dutch search!:( Thanks, Carly.

Then why didn't you simply give us the maiden name?
Kids from census also gives us a date range to work from...

The English marriage certificate should be your starting-point, to get the father’s name (see reply #3 above).

Once you’ve got it you could try this site (using variant spellings, e.g. Nicolaas) ...

He was probably at sea for the 1871/1881 census

Thanks, so much Sylvia. I'm going to discuss with my friend whether she wants to get Nicholas's marriage certificate, to find out the name of his dad for definite. Are there a lot of Dutch records about please?
