One of Nicholas's daughters was Henrietta, and is that who petrus mum was? As Henrietta is an unusual name, I'm thinking this Nicholas you have found Sylvia is the right one! Thanks again!

This seems the only Nicolaas Olie who was born in Amsterdam around that time, so I can't give you any alternatives ...
And yes, there are a fair number of records, but you need to know your way around and being able to read Dutch helps too.

The wiewaswie site only has marriages for Amsterdam indexed, so a little more elbow grease is needed for births and deaths (The Dutch BMD civil registration started around 1811 thanks to Napoleon, before that you'll need to rely on parish registers like the baptisms of the parents). Amsterdam has its own site for a lot of stuff (incl parish records), but there are some tricks to work with it properly.

Strangely enough I could not find the parents marriage in wiewaswie, so I went the long way. Here it is:
12 Nov 1834 marriage parents:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939D-98LN-C?i=79&cc=2020117 (right page)
(There should be more documents for this marriage, but that will need another bit of digging)

Let me know if you need some private assistance ... (but I'll have to get some sleep now)

cheers Sylvia

PS Mums name is Hendrietta (baptism transcription is a bit off, marriage certificate is clearer)

Sorry just realised it is Hendritta

Hi, that's the great thing about Netherlands records, they give surname and maiden surname of both the bride and grooms parents, I went back a long, long way with my Grandfathers ancestry he was born in Maasbree, Helden  :)

@Frank

And the best thing is that you are not out of pocket for certificates like with English research and - especially - with Australian research.

cheers, Sylvia

@Carly

I know that you haven’t confirmed the parents of Nicholas yet, but I thought I’d add a bit more anyway (good practice as I’ve been working mainly on English language stuff lately)

Here are the “huwelijksbijlagen” ... the documents that were required to allow a couple to marry. They can comprise of just a couple of pages, or 10+, you never know what to expect.
They start here for the 1834 marriage: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939K-F934-M8?i=968&cc=2020117

I can’t explain every field (too many), but here’s a rough outline:
#969 – “Nationale militie” – Proof of military service or why not in Petrus’ case. It describes what he looked like etc
#970 – Extract from the baptism register for Petrus
#971 – Extract from the Death Register for dad Pieter Olie (1824)
#972 - Extract from the baptism register for Elsje
#973 - Extract from the Death Register for dad Nicolaas van Nassou (1827)
#974 – “Ondertrouw” – Premarriage registration. I believe it was also used to give other people time to object (ie a bit like church banns)
#975 – part of “Ondertrouw”. Confirmation that the couple have handed in the necessary doco and some people who could be witnesses, but I have the feeling that they are more like referees for id purposes. (not 100% sure here)

Hi Sylvia,

Just having a look at the different records for; Peterus Theodorus Olie that you mentioned in your previous post. Do you know whether there would be a translation anywhere please, as I have no clue what its saying. Thanks, Carly

As far as I know only wiewaswie supplies English transcriptions (as per the marriage for his parents). I consider "Huwelijksbijlagen" to be an extra and very welcome bonus. Most of the time they are not indexed and I have never seen them transcribed. Therefore I'd already added a rough description of the various pages.

When working with other languages (eg Finnish, Sweedish, German etc) I'm an eager user of Google's translation facilities. Give that a try, but if there are bits that are still not clear feel free to ask me.
