Anthony White had married Mary Ann Thompson, Jun qtr 1858 Weardale.

Ah, good find. I think I'll search for a Joseph Thompson, son of Robert and Mary-Ann.

In fact it looks as though Mary Ann's previous husband had been a Joseph Thompson; the couple had their son James baptised at Wolsingham on 10 March 1850 (he shows as aged 11 in 1861).

Likely birth registrations:

Elizabeth Thompson mmn Wake, Dec qtr 1845 Weardale

Joseph Thompson mmn Wake, Sep qtr 1847 Weardale

James Thompson mmn Wake, Dec qtr 1849 Weardale

& Joseph Thompson marr Mary Ann Wake, Dec qtr 1844 Weardale.

Added:

Joseph is a maltster and grocer in 1851 (HO107/2388/387/28) so this looks very much like a dead end.

Ah, what do you think about the following:

Code: [Select]
Registration district: Auckland
Sub-registration district: Bishop Auckland
ED, institution, or vessel: 11a
Household schedule number: 204
Piece: 2385
Folio: 191
Page Number: 54

It lists his place of birth as 'Shull' which doesn't come up on google maps. However, it seems that Shull was a name associated with Hamsterley (see here http://www.hamsterleyvillage.com/history-2/the-blacketts/).

His father is listed as Robert and is an agricultural labourer - I think this could include a wagon wright (or he may have progressed to it at the point of Joseph's marriage).

Yes I wondered about him too.  By 1861 his father Robert is a "horsekeeper at a colliery" (and Joseph an assistant horsekeeper).

Interestingly (in light of the marriage you mention in the opening post) this one's mother's maiden name was Clarkson - as confirmed by the registration of his unusually named brother Alderson Thompson:

Alderson Thompson mmn Clarkson, Jun qtr 1844 Auckland

Joseph Thompson mmn Clarkson, Sep qtr 1846 Auckland.
