Armorial Sculptured Stones of Co Antrim - Incomplete?
« on: Wednesday 20 December 17 15:40 GMT (UK) »
From 1900 to 1903, Francis Joseph Bigger and Herbert Hughes published a series in the Ulster Journal of Archaeology called, "Armorial Sculptured Stones of the County Antrim."  This is a valuable record and includes transcriptions of many headstones which are now lost or unreadable.  However, I have come to the conclusion that the series was never completed...

In the first article published in Volume 6 (starting page 39), Bigger and Hughes wrote:

During the summer of 1899 we have been able to visit all the churchyards in the county, and to make rubbings of the arms on the tombstones in each, and at the same time to copy the inscriptions ... When we came to make up the total number of arms copied, we found they reach over 250, which we are satisfied is vastly more than any other county in Ireland

Today I worked through all the articles to compile an index for my own use.  The last installment I can find is in Volume 9 (ending page 137).  However, this ends with "to be continued", plus the total number of transcriptions I've counted is just 171.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the series was continued elsewhere, or do unpublished notes survive somewhere?

Have you checked PRONI's e-catalogue to see if any working notes for the series were deposited? perhaps also National Library, Dublin?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hallmark,
Yup, I've already downloaded several copies of the UJA from there :)  The issue is that the series of articles by Bigger and Hughes just seems to stop in Volume 9 of the UJA (even though it says tbc).  There's nothing in volumes 10 or 11 of the UJA.  I've also checked Jstor which also has the articles up to 1903, then nothing after...

Aghadowey,
I'd checked PRONI, but not the National Library in Dublin - I'll go and search the index now.

Hm, there's this at the NLI, but it is just what I have already:

Armorial sculptured stones of the County Antrim.
http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000130713

I suppose it is possible that are untitled working notes, but I imagine Bigger has left a mountain of stuff behind to sift through, e.g.:

Miscellaneous papers of Francis Joseph Bigger

There are various references online to indicate that Lieut-Col. F.C. Bigger (FJB's brother) donated a huge collection of his brother's works to the Belfast Public (Central) library and it currently remains in the ownership of Libraries NI:

http://www.rascal.ac.uk/collection/149

Edited to add: There are a number of local newspaper references from 1900 mentioning the inclusion of 'Armorial Sculptured Stones of the County Antrim' in the various issues of the Ulster Journal of Archaelogy, these too cease after September 1903 and playing around with various search combinations using different variants of the Bigger and Hughes names or key words like 'armorial' and 'sculptured' fails to elicit any further relevant 'hits' from September 1903.

Gaffy,

48 boxes, 40,000 items - I think you found the mountain I alluded to!

Unfortunately that also means I'm unlikely to get the time to search it all any time soon.  I'll just have to make a note for now and perhaps sometime in the future I'll go and have a look.

Thanks,
Gilby
