Ham Crompton
« on: Wednesday 20 December 17 18:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anybody find a baptism for Ham Crompton (Crumpton) - born in Staffordshire (or possibly Shropshire) c1781.

He married Elizabeth Jones in Madeley, in 1808.

Any information on his whereabouts prior to this would be amazing.

He died in Furnace Row, Oldbury, Worcestershire on the 7th April 1858.

Thanks

Sue

Hello
I haven't found a baptism but I do have a theory for his parents. So bear with me.
The 1851 census gives his birthplace as Madeley Wood Shropshire.
Looking at Madeley in the 1780's there are two couples called Crompton/Crumpton.

One Thomas baptises his children at the parish church no gaps and seems to be a regular church goer.
The other Richard Crumpton/Crompton and his wife Morcenia obviously do not like the Vicar and don't want to visit.
Their child Elizabeth born 9 Oct 1783 is bapt Dec 1783 at Brosley, the mother's parish.
Then we have Shem born 13.8.1785,Anne 11.9.1791 and Eleanor 8.4.1794 all baptised as adults in 1836.(25.5.1836 for the first two and 3.6.1836 for Eleanor.
Richard is a waterman of Madeley and Anne is now Mrs Buston?

As you can see there is a gap 1785-1791 and from their wedding 8.6.1780 at Brosley -1783
Richard Crumpton of Madeley married Marsenia Tannot of Brosley by licence  at Broseley wit Mary Molinix and George Watkins

I know from Ham's death cert he was born 1781 and the 1851 census gives 1787 either would fit nicely in the gaps.I'd go for 1787 end as his age is rounded down to 45 on the 1841 census.

Richard 's marital status is not stated in 1780 but it looks like he married Anne Jones 31.12 1777 at Madeley where he is a bach and she a widow.Wit John Brook and Elinor Guest .(He signs on both and so does Marcenia but Ann makes a mark).
Ann Crumpton is buried 31..3.1780 at Madeley.

Richard buried Madeley age 84 19.4.1825 of Shrewsbury but then he is a waterman
Marcenia of Coalport at Madeley age 81 years 21.9.1834 of Dropsy
But her age is out as she was baptised at Brosley 5.3.1758 d of Edward and Elisa Tannot.
siblings for her Mary 28.12.1754,Edward 9.4.1758,Anne 21.9.1760,John 19.4.1761,Elizabeth 27.11.1763,Francis 22.6.1766-27.12.1767,Elizabeth 8.2.1767,Richard 6.11.1768,Francis 28.7.1771.

Back to the Crumptons of Madeley-Shem married Elizabeth Hodgkiss 30.9.1805 at Madeley and they move to Oldbury where Shem dies 15th may 1846 miner age 63 of General debility.
Looks like Anne married Richard Rushton 13.3.1814 at Buildwas.
Ham's wife was buried Elizabeth Crompton at the Wesleyian Oldbury 23 Aug 1832 age 45 born Madelety Wood d of William and Elizabeth Jones.
which may explain the lack of Anglican baptisms.

Richard Crumpton is a problem-there is a baptism at Madeley 30 Nov 1742 to Adam and Sarah Crompton which is nearest  but there are others in surrounding parishes and that would make him 35 when he got married.
But that looks the most likely to me.

This is direct lineage to the Crompton/Crumpton family Adam Crompton1665-1743 M Elizabeth Eastop -Adam Crompton 1714 M Sarah Cox -William Crumpton 1736 Richard Crumpton1753-1825 M Marcene Tannot in 1780- Shem Crumpton 1785-1857 m Elizabeth Hodgkiss 1781-1857-Michael Hodgkiss Crumpton 1811-1843 M Elizabeth Pearsall1814-1896 Michael Crumpton 1840-1930 m Mary AnnMillward . It looks as though the Crompton turned to Crumpton as perhaps a Birmingham pronounciation.

Hope this is of some assistance
