married twice in Wombourne
« on: Thursday 21 December 17 10:49 GMT (UK) »
Surely there weren't two couples with the same name married in the same Church three months apart  ??? Can anyone suggest what is going on here and which wedding is the one I want.
Free Reg has
Aaron PARKES & Sarah   FLAVEL married 14 Aug 1797 witnessed by Benjamin PARKES & Lucy FLAVEL
and
Aaron PARKES & Sarah   FLAVEL married 6 Nov 1797 witnessed by Mary KENLY & William SADLER

The names are not common so what is going on here any ideas?

That was my first thought, but banns aren't witnessed are they?

Is this just a transcription you have seen, or images of the actual entries?

I can't check myself at the moment, because FindMyPast is down for maintenance.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

If they are 2 different couples  :o one of the Sarah's appears to have a sister Lucy. Does the minister's name appear on the record? If so, is it the same minister on both occasions? If they are the same couple, perhaps there was some sort of error perpetrated the first time that made the marriage void? Though in that case it would be noted in the parish record.

I'll check the image on FindMyPast when it is back.  However, FreeREG have the same two entries.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Could the clerk have written the marriages into the parish record sometime after the event, from loose notes, and got it wrong?
