John Joseph Allen B 11 Jan 1864 St Pancras, London migrated 1875
« on: Thursday 21 December 17 12:59 GMT (UK) »
The above was the son of John Thomas Allen and Rebecca Roberts or Roberta Rosser, he was in the 1871 UK census at St Pancras and again in 1881 working as a gilder.
I found a US Naturalisation record  for a John J Allen at 24 Oct 1892 recording his exact dob but the emigration is recorded as Sept 1875-could they have made an error on this? He was living at 17-19 Park Row, New York working as a Clerk.
After that he disappeared?
Perhaps I've got the wrong one but he disappeared in the UK too after 1881.

There are several documents giving the same date of emigration, one suggests that the date of birth could be the 1st rather than the 11th January.  However, that would mean that he was only 11 when he emigrated, and as you say he is on the 1881 census with his parents with a completely different occupation.

Seem to have drawn a blank on that then? I suppose being a relatively common surname it'll be difficult to find in the US? There seem to have been a lot of Irish emigrants with the same name.

The J in the John J Allen who emigrated in 1875 may not be Joseph, it could be James! I don’t think he is yours, just a coincidence in the DOB. You need to see if he can be found in a later US census which may help to either confirm or eliminate him.

After more delving, this one looks like a red herring.  In 1900 they are James and Rosely Allen; he is said to be born Apr 1866, immigrated 1899, alien (not naturalized), occupation gardener.
