c.1797 James Worthington wed Isabella at St Leonard, Middleton?
« on: Thursday 21 December 17 14:48 GMT (UK) »
I thought I'd found the marriage of James WORTHINGTON, weaver, and Isabella in Eccles in 1792, but in looking at the bishop's transcripts, it was a Samuel - not James - WORTHINGTON who married Isabella.

However, the James and Isabella WORTHINGTONs I’m after were based in the Middleton/Heap/Bury area. These two must be them:

----
James WORTHINGTON
buried: 09 Apr 1816 St Leonard, Middleton
age: 60 [born c.1756]
abode: Middleton
occcupation: Weaver
----
Isabella WORTHINGTON, Widow
buried: 11 May 1818 St Leonard, Middleton
age: 45 [born c.1773]
abode: Middleton
----

And their known children were:

1. Edward WORTHINGTON
baptised: 25 Feb 1798 St Leonard, Middleton
father: weaver
abode: Middleton

2. Ann WORTHINGTON
baptised:04 May 1800 St Leonard, Middleton
father: weaver
abode: Middleton

3. Sarah WORTHINGTON
baptised: 18 Sep 1803 St Leonard, Middleton
father: weaver
abode: Middleton
[married: Benjamin WHITEHEAD, 23 Jun 1828 Manchester Cathedral]

4. Betty WORTHINGTON
baptised: 20 Jun 1805 St Mary the Virgin, Bury
died: 18 Sep 1809
buried: 20 Sep 1809 St Mary the Virgin, Bury
abode: Heap

5. Rebekah/Rebecca WORTHINGTON
born: 02 May 1808
baptised: 21 Aug 1808 St Mary the Virgin, Bury
abode: Heap
[married: Richard HUTCHINSON, 19 Nov 1837 St Mary the Virgin, Bury]

----
So I wonder if James and Isabella were married in or around Middleton in 1797 or slightly earlier. On account of their possible 15+ year age difference, this may have been James' second marriage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lancs opc covers the marriages for Middleton St Leonards for the period you are looking at and I can't see a James Worthington marrying an Isabella.

If you think the first wife is Mary, there is a marriage to Mary Taylor 1780, St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich.
Abode for both is ‘Heatons in this Parish’.

That sounds promising, heywood, especially (having looked at the map) since Little Heaton, Blackley, and Rhodes are all within a mile or two of Middleton.
