Coleman-Agnew marriage 1810
« on: Thursday 21 December 17 16:29 GMT (UK) »
I have searched everywhere in an effort to learn more about James Coleman of Ballybentrah who married Mary Agnew of Donegore Hill in 1810.    The marriage was listed in Walker's Hibernian Magazine.   Does anyone have any additional information regarding this couple?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Barb Agnew Miers

1862 John Coleman has map reference 4 in Ballybentragh Grange of Nilteen     Antrim
36 acres good sized house valued at 5 pa, it could be the same John who has 30 acres of land from the same landlord in plot 9 Dunadry townland nearby. see http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/

his sucessorsare be in PRONI continuation sheets. https://apps.proni.gov.uk/Val12B/ImageResult.aspx
 Current PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/1/17C (1881 - 1893)

2nd change Alexander Lawther
references at end say 82,90,91 ie 1882,1890,1891

For the purposes of elimination I have some information on one James Coleman, though not the right generation.

The Coleman family that connects to my Barron family (more than once) is that of Samuel Coleman b c1780 of Ballytweedy. His son James William Coleman b c1831 died 4 Dec 1912, married Jane Hanna daughter of William Hanna and Mary Barron.

Another son of Samuel, Matthew Coleman b c1834, married Margaret Barron younger sister of Mary above.

Samuel and family are in the 1851 census.

As an aside I noted that Ballyaltikilligan listed Gracey as his name of interest. I have recently been in touch with 2 other Gracey researchers as my current research on my mother side includes the family of my gt grandmothers brother Robert Clarke who married Martha Gracey, daughter of Robert Gracey from Rathfriland. They married in Australia in 1883.

Hi,

The Colemans of Ballybentra were buried at Donegore.  There are two flat tablets more or less beside each other – one for the family of John Coleman (c1760-1837) and the other for James Coleman (c1757-1822).  Both were of Ballybentra and I’m guessing they were brothers, though I’ve no proof.

Erected
by AGNESS COLMAN in memory
of her Husband
JAMES COLMAN
late of Ballybentra who departed
this life the 1st day of June 1822
aged 65 years.
Also their Son THOMAS who departed

the above AGNES COLMAN departed
this life the ??th Decr 1852 aged 72 years.
Also AGNES COLMAN daughter of
JAMES and AGNES COLMAN
…………….? Aged 36 years
Also ELIZA ANN LAWTHER
Wife of JOHN COLMAN of Ballybentra

aged …………..
Also JOHN COLMAN of bally-
bentra ……………………… April 1881
aged 68 years.
And his daughter MARGARET M. COLEMAN
Died 21st December 1938 aged 78 years
ELIZABETH ANN LAWTHER (IZA)
Died 12 March 1981 aged 89
Daughter of the late
Alexander & Catherine Jane Lawther.

Belfast Newsletter, 31 Dec 1852
Dec. 14, at her residence, Ballybentra, Agnes, relict of the late Mr. James Coleman, aged 73 years.

Belfast Newsletter, 27 Sep 1856
September 12, at the house of Dr. Ferguson, Doagh, Agnes, youngest daughter of the late Mr. James Coleman, Ballybentra.

Belfast Newsletter, 19 Feb 1839
On the 8th inst. by the Rev. Samuel Alison, Donegore, Mr Wm. R. Waters, Parkgate, to Jane, eldest daughter of the late Mr James Coleman, Ballybentra.

One of the witnesses to the above marriage was a Samuel Agnew.  I think it is probable that Mary Agnew was James Coleman’s first wife.  Unfortunately these two Coleman baptisms at 1st Donegore Presbyterian don’t list the mother’s name:

James, son of James Coleman, Ballybentra – baptised 20th Aug 1813
Agnes, daughter of James Coleman, Ballybentra – born 31st Jan 1820, baptised 28th Feb 1820
