Prisoners were recorded in institutional census returns and can be found in the usual way.  Sometimes those in institutions were recorded by their initials rather than full names, though in my experience that applied more usually to asylums than prisons.

What is the source of your information about the conviction, snd what was the exact date of it?

I can't easily find any evidence of the existence of a John Ennis Sawyer b abt 1847 East Riding.

Sorry - I now see you have the court entry.

If there is any more info than you have given us, it may help.

It says William SMITH was 27 and a native of Whitehaven. ENNIS was from Ireland?

John Ennis was confined in Portsmouth Convict Prison at the time a licence for his release was granted on 30 November 1872.

The conviction details on the licence confirm this is the correct John Ennis.

It says William SMITH was 27 and a native of Whitehaven.

In that case he may be the William Smith, labourer, 29 b Whitehaven, who in 1871 is a convict enumerated in Woking Invalid Convict Prison.

RG10/808/117/18.
