John Ennis was confined in Portsmouth Convict Prison at the time a licence for his release was granted on 30 November 1872.

The conviction details on the licence confirm this is the correct John Ennis.

Transcribed on A*try 1871 as John ERMIS (Portsmouth Prison):

ThanjK's to everyone who has replied to my query.
Q
William Smith married Harriet Worledge, in. Beverley 1893.  At the time of his marriage he was a widr,  living in Esk, Nr  Tickton, a Blacksmith, Father Robert Smith also a Blacksmith.
He was quite a. Lad, and up at the Magistrates Court in Beverley on several occasions, for assault and drunken behaviour, plus non payment of monies owed to Harriet and his children by the Court.
He was found in fhe 1891 census in Beverley where he states he was born in South Cliffe, Yorkshire, which was where he committed his burglaries in 1868 and is a widower.
No 1st Marriage yet has ever been found or a Baptism.
I did find a baptism in Beverly St Mary in 1845 to a Robert Smith states in column born 1842 but wether this is him I do not know.
