More help- Different maiden names. Why?
« on: Friday 22 December 17 17:22 GMT (UK) »
I have a real problem. For ages I thought these were two different families, but a birth confirms they are not.

Benjamin Galbraith was born 18 March 1867. It says on his birth cert that his mum and dad, John Galbraith & Ann Mackie were married on 2 November 1860 in Aberdeen.

A search on Scotlandspeople does indeed find that John & Ann were married on that date, but Ann's surname on that document in Reid. In Other births of their children she uses the name Reid and other its recorded as Mackie or McKay.  Cross referencing and addresses through Census returns confirm the children. But for some reason I cannot for the life of me wonder why she's using two different maiden names.

Any suggestions?

Quinn - Letterkenny /Coatbridge & Airdrie

Johnston - Airdrie & Coatbridge

Could she be illegitimate or mother remarried?

I have a family where the mother was Elizabeth Jane Uglow HAMLEY, the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth HAMLEY by an unspecified UGLOW. On the birth certs of the couple's three daughters her maiden name is correctly HAMLEY, however on the birth cert of their only son I always joke that the husband had a little bit too much cheer over it before registering, as he registered the baby with maiden name UGLOW.

As far as I know Elizabeth never used the name UGLOW, but she did use WALKER for a while (the name of the man she had illegitimate children with) and ROBBINS (the name of her step-father).

"... In Other births of their children she uses the name Reid and other its recorded as Mackie or McKay."

For each birth certificate that you have -

Where mother is named REID, who is the informant?

Where mother is named MACKIE etc, who is the informant?

For the marriage certificate that you have, 2 Nov 1860, can you please list all the information.

Can you please identify this family in 1861 and 1871 census.
