Jorose,

I am fairly sure that the pension record ShaunJ found is the correct one, born 1785 in Gilling York, enlisted in 1804, discharged in 1814 due to being injured in Portugal, 5ft 11, dark eyes, dark hair, a farmer by trade,

In the 1841 census there's a George Trowsdale, 25, umbrella maker, with family in Devonshire Street, Marylebone. Another son?

Thank you all again. I think you have cracked it.

In the 1841 census there's a George Trowsdale, 25, umbrella maker, with family in Devonshire Street, Marylebone. Another son?
HO107; Piece: 677; Folio: 34; Page: 61;
Believe it or not, this is Charles, with wife Eleanor as Ellen & daughter Selina b Jun 1838 at 11 Devonshire St as Celina all indexed as Lowsdale on ancestry. Selina appears as Eleanor in 1851.

I am fairly sure that the pension record ShaunJ found is the correct one, born 1785 in Gilling York, enlisted in 1804, discharged in 1814 due to being injured in Portugal, 5ft 11, dark eyes, dark hair, a farmer by trade,
I agree, & thank you all for your help. I had been always trying to find when this branch of Trowsdale came to London from Yorkshire. I read on this site p 5
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l6w/
that there were many Napoleonic War veterans living around Market St because the recently developed Market House was taken over by the Chelsea Hospital pensions department due to slack take up of the shops/workshops.
Just to lay it out for those looking, the following births/baptisms,
1806 - William John s/o William & Sarah, no address or fathers occupation shown ( this is  William John who married Sarah Bates and was an umbrella maker)
There is Louisa 1818 in here film CO35245 no image on
1811 - Thomas, s/o William & Sarah, father a soldier
1813 - Sarah Ann D/o William & Sarah, father a soldier
1818 - Charles s/o William John & Sarah, no occupation given
There is Elizabeth Ann 1823 in here d/o William & Sarah film C035247 no image; probably died before 1841
1828 - James Robert s/o William & Sarah, labourer
1830 - William Henry s/o William John & Sarah, umbrella maker, 5 Sligo Lane
It was the father named as William John in 1818 & 1830 that first indicated William 1785 was William John

Some large gaps there and inconsistency with William & William John?
I think as Sarah [Sutcliffe] died Nov 1830 and WIlliam John 1806 married 1831, it all fits in

So.....earlier baptisms and occupations match with William and Sarah marrying in 1805 and with the records of William being pensioned in 1815, also with the desertion record of son James (though no mention of William Henry on the desertion notice, perhaps he had died???).
Can't find a death/burial or workhouse admission but will carry on looking

The address of the last baptism matches that of mother Sarah's burial.

Could William have worked as a labourer after his discharge and then when when WJ was older have worked with him as an umbrella maker in his last ten years?
This seems likely.

Eldest son William is at Barretts Court with his family in 1841, perhaps father William came to live with him prior to his death?
Again this is possible/likely
In 1851 James Trowsdale, 21, is living with Charles and Eleanor and is listed as his brother, again this matches with the desertion article.
Couldn't find him in 1861, 1871
Name:   James Trousdale

Birth Place:   Marylebone, London, Smith
Pension Admission or Examination Date:   8 Jul 1879

Am downloading record from Findmypast.
1881 RG11; Piece: 151; Folio: 26; Page: 44 boarding at 9 Burne St with Charles 1845 son of Charles & Eleanor, unmarried, pensioner. 1891? Death cert Marylebone 1898 1st quarter 1 a 492

All in all a great thread, good outcome. All pointing in one direction. I will try to tie up the ages from the 1821 census as I have found the images on findmypast & report back

Thank you all so much for your help. May be off line for a few days now.
