William Trowsdale/Trousdale/Trousdall ca 1785 - 1844
« on: Friday 22 December 17 22:17 GMT (UK) »
Searching for the parents of William [edited to remove middle name as I have no proof] John Trowsdale born ca 1785.

This is what I know:
An umbrella maker, married Sarah Sutcliffe in Marylebone in 1805. Burial of Sarah Trowsdale 18 Nov 1830 St Marylebone aged 45 living at Stingo Lane.

A baptism I have found which may be possible: IGI film P009161 in Gilling near Helmsley, Yorkshire. Children of John & Elizabeth [Betty] Browne: William 9/5/1785, Thomas 31/5/1787, Joseph 3/7/1790, Bridget 13/1/1792, Sarah 4/8/1793, John 3/7/1796, Robert 29/4/1798, Elizabeth 29/11/1798, George 13/10/1799 d 18/4/1802.

Not yet found William on 1841 census; his son Charles a minor lived in Market St Marylebone on marriage in 1838 so William may be there; but some Marylebone 1841 sheets are very faint & may not have been indexed; I have browsed through Market Street 1841 HO107/675/7/9 but can see no occupation that looks like umbrella maker.

Death
TROUSDALE, WILLIAM       60
GRO Reference: 1844  M Quarter in MARYLEBONE  Volume 01  Page 215
I have the burial record for this - on 25 Feb 1844 aged 58 of Barrett's Court.

This could be him too:
Morning Advertiser 30 Apr 1832:
St Mary-le-bone;  2 guineas reward...William Trowsdale hath deserted his Child James aged 4 years whereby he has become chargeable to this Parish. He is about 6 ft high, very stout, fair complexion, dark hair and blue eyes, by trade a umbrella maker, was formerly a pensioner in the 2d Life Guards at 6d per diem which pension he sold about 1 year ago . Whoever will apprehend [either of] the above shall receive the reward.
The James [Robert] baptised 3 Oct 1828 so 4 in 1832 in Bryanston Squ, Westminster was son of William LABOURER & Sarah of 14 Bowling Green Buildings -  so possibly not my man.

I found a record found for William Trowsdale aged 18 on enlistment born Gilling, Yorkshire in 2nd Life Guards Napoleonic War enlisted 1804 discharged 1814. In Muster Books for regiment on ancestry 1808 - 1813. This William ties in with the baptism I found.
There is a record for a pension for William Trowsdale aged 54 in 1814, 17 yr 1 mo in army 1s? £10 - this is really too old for my William.

Any help confirming William's parents  - ie finding him on 1841 as a pensioner or umbrella maker born out of county would be fantastic.

Thanks, Josey

There is an 1814 discharge record for William Trousdale of 2nd Life Guards, born Gilling circa 1785. A farmer by trade. Discharged as a consequence of having been ruptured in Portugal.

A pension record has his name as Trowsdell.

Do you have anything to show that the William who married Sarah Sutcliffe is an umbrella maker? Or is this confused with son William John born 1806 who is an umbrella maker on all childrens baptisms and on 1841 census?

There is no occupation for father on baptism for William John born 1806 but he a soldier on Sarah Ann's and Thomas's baptisms in 1813.

Hmmm, food for thought there. Thank you all for replying.

groom, I hadn't followed that baptism through censuses, thank you.

ShaunJ, thanks, being a farmer rules him out then. Just strange that the William who deserted his son James was an umbrella maker who had also been in the 2nd Life Guards,

Jo, Mary Ann 1841 is daughter of William John 1806 [son of William ca 1785] & Sarah Bates married 1831 Paddington [Pallot's Index]
TROWSDALE, MARY  ANN     BATES
GRO Reference: 1841  D Quarter in MARYLEBONE  Volume 01  Page 232
Charles & Eleanor [nee Hayter] are my g g grandparents. Charles is son of William umbrella maker on marriage cert of 1838 see snip below.
No occupation on marriage to Sarah Sutcliffe. I seem to have made an assumption here  :-[. I have an unreferenced date [oh the foolishness of youth] for marriage of 24 Sep 1805, only the banns.
I have the indexes for the 1821 & 1831 censuses & attach the relevant sections, looks like the Castle Street East address is the most likely, but I haven't been to LMA to see the actual census sheets which I understand only had a breakdown of head of household & number of people in it.
ADDED: Have found these censuses on Findmypast.

Thanks, Josey

Just looking at ca 1890 Marylebone map
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=51.5182&lon=-0.1371&layers=168&b=1
Market St is now Gt Titchfield St, Castle St E [thoughts from from the 1821 & 1831 censuses] runs off it.
Barratt's Court now St Christopher's Place, Barrett St & is a bit further west.

May be worth trying to locate a street directory from the 1800 - 1840 period.

Hi Josey,

Just to lay it out for those looking, the following births/baptisms,

1806 - William John s/o William & Sarah, no address or fathers occupation shown ( this is  William John who married Sarah Bates and was an umbrella maker)
1811 - Thomas, s/o William & Sarah, father a soldier
1813 - Sarah Ann D/o William & Sarah, father a soldier
1818 - Charles s/o Willaim John & Sarah, no occupation given
1828 - James Robert s/o William & Sarah, labourer
1830 - William Henry s/o William John & Sarah, umbrella maker, 5 Sligo Lane

Some large gaps there and inconsistency with William & William John?

So.....earlier baptisms and occupations match with William and Sarah marrying in 1805 and with the records of William being pensioned in 1815, also with the desertion record of son James (though no mention of William Henry on the desertion notice, perhaps he had died???).

The address of the last baptism matches that of mother Sarah's burial.

Could William have worked as a labourer after his discharge and then when when WJ was older have worked with him as an umbrella maker in his last ten years?

Eldest son William is at Barretts Court with his family in 1841, perhaps father William came to live with him prior to his death?

In 1851 James Trowsdale, 21, is living with Charles and Eleanor and is listed as his brother, again this matches with the desertion article.
