Lunatic

Could someone tell me if there is anyway to find out why someone is classed as a lunatic around 1911, or where the hospital is after finding someone in the 1911 census as it just gives the area.

Have you looked at the actual image and gone back through the pages to see if it gives an address?

Thanks again everyone   The person I was trying to find was a John Donellany originally spelling Donely born Dunmore Galway Ireland he ended up after 1901 in or around Manchester in a  Hospital classed as a lunatic.

That looks to be Prestwich Asylum and the only one I can see is the one you posted in your previous thread with birth ‘Ireland, locality not known’.

Is that the man you are looking for or are you doing a general search for possibilities?

Lunatic, Imbecile, and Feeble-minded
The other reason why the returns regarding the number of mentally infirm persons are unsatisfactory is due to the risks arising from the confusion of terms. The terms themselves are not defined in the scheduled instruction. This was scarcely possible; but the term " lunatic " is intended for use in cases where the infirmity has been acquired during life, while the terms "imbecile " and "feeble-minded" are intended for use in cases where the infirmity has existed from birth, or from an early age, the former being applied to the more extreme cases, and the latter to the milder. An examination of the returns, however, provides ample evidence that these distinctions have not been uniformly made.
The 1890  Lunacy Act (53&54 Vict., c.5) defined lunatic as “an idiot or person of unsound mind”.
