lyde lane, yeovil
« on: Monday 25 December 17 10:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to track down Sydney House, Lyde Lane, Yeovil. My gt grandmother Bessie Higgins had my grandmother Margaret on the 15.10.1902. When unmarried. Sydney Hoyse is a a couple of miles away from her house in Trent, Dorset. Was this a friends house or perhaps a home to support unmarried mother's. Lyde Lane became in the main Lyde Road. Any info re the house would help.

Many thanks   Mark

Hi Mark,

I forget if you have access to any of the $ sites.

That address seems to be the home of Samuel and Lucy PERHAM.

Lyde Road was originally called Lyde Lane.  As seen in the 1901 Ordnance Survey map on this link.

Sandra, many thanks. No real clue regarding them apart from being able to live off their own means. I have not come across them as a family name or friend. I think Bessie was living at Trent Mill with her father so he would have needed help. I think years ago I came across Perham as a publican but it is still a mystery and I have no idea where in the lane the house was.

Very many thanks, Mark

On the 1901 census you have as dwellings Pen Mill farm, Babylon View, Sydney House, Maybank House, Lyde Lane, Rose Cottage, Lyde Vale,  Little Lyde Farm, Hospital Cottage, Great Lyde Cottages, Great Lyde Farm, Mudford Road, etc

if this is how the enumerator walked the route, it ties down where Sydney House was.

Many thanks the 1927 map shows  a couple of unnamed properties in the right area. Hopefully another map will show the actual house or a photograph. The area from memory has been built over with a housing estate and it might mean that the developer to get planning showed the houses thath were flattened.
