   Thanks Stan. That seems to cover it. As a matter of interest, where part of the parish boundary runs through coppice woodland, it is (or was) marked by a line of pollard hornbeams known as "upstands" which are clearly marked on the same map.

   I have just looked at another village on the same map. I had wondered why the words "White Thorn" appeared at a certain point and now realise it is where the parish boundary turns away from the road. I shall look with new eyes at these maps!
