Nicholas SADLIER, born 1827/28, Middlesex, England
« on: Wednesday 27 December 17 14:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

TROVE has an entry for the Mount Alexander Mail published on 06/10/1856 which describes Nicholas SADLIER.

I wonder if anyone can expand on that detail with any information after 1856 please

Nicholas Sadlier who emigrated from Parkhurst Isle of Wight sailed in the vessel Mandarin from Parkhurst 21 June 1843 - his age if alive would be 29 years next November 1856.  He sailed for Hobert Town Van Diemens Land , he learned the trade of a sawyer to go out. Was last heard of at Williams Town. If alive write to William Whitelaw Post office Friars Creek Fryers Tpwn.

6 October 1856

The name crops up but nothing to positively identify him

Hi Tony  :)

There is a marriage for man of the similar name in 1874 in Victoria however on my resource it shows his place of birth as Tipperary. On my index the surname is SADLEIR .  Of course info on the marriage cert may not be accurate if he was attempting to hide his past or it may be another man with similar name.

Cheers  :)

Edit.  Further research leads me to believe that this is not your person of interest.  Born 1834 Ireland.

This gives some info about the above Nicholas SADLIER including connections to Tasmania. There are several articles on this family on trove. They seemed to have lived in Vic, Tas, NSW, SA. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/56493050

This is gentleman spells his name SADLEIR not SADLIER.  He is not the convict.

Good Morning Everyone and Best Wishes for 2018,

There are quite a few references to "SADLIER" in TROVE and establishing a connection with the above Nicholas SADLIER is essentially the task.   I did learn that a Nicholas SADLIER sailed from Hobart on 26/02/1846 aboard the Sapphire as a passenger bound for Sydney, though how that fits with the newspaper article is difficult to understand.

Thank you all for your help.

Afterthought for Cando: "SADLIER" is not such an uncommon name, but, sadly, his convict records do not indicate where he was born except possibly Knightsbridge in London his last known address::)

It is possible that Nicholas SADLIER was a hired servant, departing on the SAPPHIRE as he supposedly got his Ticket of Leave on arrival
