Alexander Bain of Northumberland Fusiliers & South Staffs Regiment
« on: Thursday 28 December 17 12:19 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on Alexander BAIN who was a Corporal in the Northumberland Fusiliers. I believe his service no. was 2099 and that he became a Sergeant in the South Staffordshire Regiment under service no. 238042. National Archives has his medal card but not a service record.

It’s possible that Alexander was in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 1913/14 as he was said to have fathered a child born there in Feb 1914 (died April 1915).

There are two Alexander BAINs local to Newcastle with service records although neither were Corporals in the Northumberland Fusiliers.

Alexander McKenzie BAIN's birth was registered Q4 1888 in Newcastle to parents John and Barbara. He was a Sergeant in the RFA - service no. 836997.

Alexander BAIN born c. September 1893 in South Shields was a Gunner in the RGA - service no. 127844. When he enlisted, he gave his father as only next of kin (also Alexander BAIN, address unknown). He later married Alice Beatrice HAMILTON (on 21.1.1918) who then was given as next of kin.

Other candidates are Alexander BAIN birth registered Q2 1892 South Shields to parents George and Hannah BAIN. In the 1911 census, he’s recorded as a shop assistant, age 19, living with his widowed mother in South Shields.

And Alexander BAIN birth registered Q1 1895 in Newcastle to parents John and Isabella. He would have been 17/18 when the child was conceived and possibly too young to be a Corporal at that time. In the 1911 census, he’s recorded as a page, age 16, at the Durham County Club.

A further Alexander BAIN born c. 1886 in Scotland was a Private in the Northumberland Fusiliers under service no. 293190 (with previous nos. 2933, 795 and 345833, the latter two for The Black Watch).

The most likely candidate from these is the one born in 1892 in South Shields but he needs a bit more digging. If anyone has him, or Alexander from the first para, in their tree, it would be great to hear from them.

Many thanks in advance.
