Joseph George Anson 1842 - 1913
« on: Thursday 28 December 17 13:55 GMT (UK) »
I have a mystery with Joseph George Anson.

He was born in Hambleton Yorkshire in 1842; He married Elizabeth Webster in October 1864.
At the 1871 census he lived at Chapel St. Hambleton, with his wife and 2 daughters Mary Elizabeth and Ada. He was a potato merchant and agricultural engine driver employing 1 labourer.
After 1871 he disappears.
The next reference to him is a gravestone in York cemetery, where he, his wife Elizabeth, and daughter Mary Elizabeth Marshall (Anson) are buried. His inscription says that he died 11th March 1913 in the USA

I have no idea how, or why he went to the USA. I can find no record of his passage there, or where in the USA he died.

Chris
Anson, Neville, Cook, Knight, Bennett, Silverwood Strickland

Joseph George Anson's wife Elizabeth.

1881 still lived at Chapel St. Hambleton, with her Mother and daughter Ada aged 13

1891 living at 113 Lowther Rd York, as a shopkeeper, with daughters Ada as her shop assistant, and her daughter Mary Elizabeth a seamstress

1901 she lived at 28 Markham Rd. York. now retired.
Boarding at the same address is a Charles W Marshall, Piano tuner, who is most likely to be her daughter Mary Elizabeth's future husband

There is a death showing for George Anson 11 March 1913. The burial is said to be Conesville Coshocton county Ohio.
On the find a grave site is an extract from the local paper that says... age 75 died at Barnes coal mine no1 near Conesville.

Have a look in the area for a census. Ill see what I can find.

What a very sad end  :'(  If he immigrated 1877 as the 1910 census insinuates, we should really find him on a couple of other census.  There was a New York Passenger List - 23 March 1875 - City Of Chester -  with a George Anson born 1845 (said Ireland but ditto from above - which might not be correct) labourer  ???

Sandra thank you for adding the link I'm hopeless at them.

I wonder if Anson or Hanson in the census I'm still going through them.

The 1910 census image is here - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RNB-9MGJ?i=1&cc=1727033  He said he was naturalized.

In the 14 Mar. 1913 Coshocton Daily Times, it says the coroner filed a report on the inquest involving George Anson.  Strangely, he doesn't seem to show up in the Ohio death records or index.

In the 25 Aug. 1906 Coshocton Daily Age, it says:

"Police Court

George Anson was arrested by Officer Hankins and Freteug Friday evening near Sixth Street.  He was charged with intoxication and fined $4 by Mayor Smith Saturday morning."

There are also some newspaper articles that seem to refer to his estate being administered:  https://coshoctontribune.newspapers.com/search/#query=%22george+anson%22&dr_year=1913-1914&offset=2
