Stewart family of Moffat.
« on: Thursday 28 December 17 23:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm from Moffat and I've been tracing my ancestors from the Stewart Family tree as I'm a Stewart. I've gone as far back as to James Stewart who was born in Moffat in 1842 to Agnes Jackson and a John Stewart. As far as I know that Agnes and John were not married as the censuses and death record for Agnes show her as a spinster/single. But I'm really stuck at John Stewart as I have NO IDEA who he is. All I know about him is from James's Baptism record. Can anyone help me as I'm a relative beginner at genealogy and I'm not sure what to do next? I've attached a copy of the said baptism record for your interest.

Thanks.

The baptism record shows that John Stewart was a servant at Cultar/Culter.

Culter is in Lanarkshire - when James Stewart married wife Janet Snedden in 1872 he described his father as John Stewart, Ploughman.

Therefore I think this is probably your man:

1851 Census - Wiston and Roberton, Lanarkshire

John Stewart  36     Ploughman     born Culter, Lanarkshire
Rachel Stewart 33                        born Wiston and Roberton, Lanarkshire
William Stewart 7                         born Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire
Janet Stewart 4                                      ditto

Scopes (One-Name Study - Worldwide)
Suffolk - Grist, Knights, Bullenthorpe, Watcham
Scotland - Spence, Horne, Cowan, Moffat
London -  Monk

Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.   Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow.   Just walk beside me and be my friend.

Firstly, Happy new year!

Wow.... THANK YOU SO MUCH. I hadn't really expected this much to be revealed and it has really helped me in my research into Stewart ancestry.

It would appear that both Agnes and John had a short relationship before Rachel came along. But it seems that both John and James were on speaking terms, otherwise, John would not be named on his marriage record.

I've since discovered that John's parents were William Stewart and Jane Ramsay, and John's paternal grandparents were William Stewart and Cecilia Wishart. Also I have discovered that his paternal uncle was a bit of a tearaway and had been in prison before being deported to Australia. However, it would seems that I'm stuck on William Stewart Senior as I cannot find any information about his father. I have tried to follow the method of naming children after grandparents, fathers etc... But it seems to have been muddled up.

John was born in 1814 to William Stewart (b.1/9/1792) and Jane Ramsay (birth unknown). William was born to William Stewart Snr (b. about 1770) and Cecilia Wishart (b. between 1761 and 1770). Otherwise I'm at a dead end. Any more advice?

Thank you again!

Hello,

An update on the Stewart family tree search. I've since discovered that John Stewart (b.1814) was the son of a William Stewart born in Glasgow on 5th Dec in 1783 and his spouse, Janet Ramsay (birth and death unknown). So the previous info I got was wrong and I have to start all over again.

Although this is a long shot but I was wondering if anyone on here might know a bit about William Stewart or even is descended from John and his spouse Rachel Alston's children- William, Janet, Jane and Jemima Stewart?

TIA
