19 Manchester Street, Pancras / Grays Inn Lane
« on: Friday 29 December 17 09:35 GMT (UK) »
I have a rellie who was born to an unmarried mother at 19 Manchester Street, Pancras, Grays Inn Lane on 7 April 1869.

This was away from her family home, so I am wondering if this was a home for fallen women or similar.  Does anyone know?

I cannot find either of them after this until 1901 when she is living with her brother in Norwich (but not earlier) and he has married in Bristol in 1894, and in 1901 is living in Streatham, but works (1911) and dies (1952) in Bristol.

I would love to look this address up for 1871 on Ancestry - is there a way of doing this?

Just on the offchance - I am looking for
  • Emily Holmes, b 1843 Fressingfield, Suffolk  (mother)
  • Howard George Holmes b 1869, Pancras London (child)

Happy New Year.

Thanks for that.  In 1871 it looks like a private house, James Lockyer, Architect & Surveyor, aged 74 lives there with two servants.

Curious and curiouser!

That's not right. The 1871 census page is  Piece 217 folio 9 page 11. There are 3 households:
Elizabeth Walker (dressmaker) & family, Emma Hinks (dressmaker) + a boarder, and John May (whitesmith) & family

James Lockyer was at 19 Southampton Street.

Oops, I had Southampton on my mind - not Manchester.

You are absolutely right.  Looks more like the sort of place a 'girl in trouble' might have found for herself???

She doesn't seem to have had the child baptised, London records are usually quite good.

Thanks again,

Pam

Curious, I cannot find a John Kamplin other than in 1851 as a Musician b 1819 in a Lodging house.....  so where was he in 1861 and 1871, I wonder?
