McKellar & McFarlane- help please!
« on: Saturday 30 December 17 02:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My gtx 5 grandparents were Archibald McKellar and Jean McFarlane. They married on 8/2/1782 Strathlachlan , Argyll. A couple of generations later and the family were well established in Paisley.

I'd love to find their baptisms so I can get at least a generation back. It's a common name in Argyll which is what's proving difficult and they're not on any census nor can I find death records for them as pre 1855 I think when they died.

They did not stay in Argyll tho as the last child I have found for them was born in Renton (Daniel)(Dunbartonshire) tho he eventually crossed the Clyde  as my gt x4 Duncan did.

I know Argyll mainly as a tourist but not this area. I have checked SP(several times over a lot of years)  but finding nothing that helps me there as could be any one of many

Many Thanks

Ann

Hi Ann
I had a quick look on Family Search and there is a birth of an Archibald McKellar at Strathlachan in 1759 with father's name also Archibald.  Checking the marriage in 1782 there is a suggestion that he was born in 1756 and Jean or Jane McFarlane was born in 1761.  Nothing definitive I'm afraid.  Not sure where in the world you are but best wishes for a peaceful 2018.  isk :( :(

Hi Isk

Many thanks. I'll definitely have a look at that one. It sounds promising  :)

I'm from Paisley (Renfrewshire) originally but I live in Yorkshire but still go home to see my mum so I think maybe we should take a wee trip up there and see if anything locally in the spring. It's not that far, nice trip oin a sunny day and it is her lot I'm looking for (She's a McKellar)

Happy New Year to you too  :)

Happy to help Ann.  I also have folks from Strathlachan, Ferguson by name.  I know Paisley fairly well too, as I worked for J&P Coats, many years ago.

Good luck with your research.  isk
