Mary Ann Grosser 1855-?
« on: Saturday 30 December 17 10:19 GMT (UK) »
Hello.  One last sibling in the Grosser (sometimes Groser or Grocer) family is eluding me.  After her marriage to William Entwistle on 28 October 1872 (he was 21 and a private, 87th Regiment based at Cambridge Barracks, Portsmouth, Hampshire; she was from Smith's Lane (sometimes Court) in Portsmouth) I can't find any trace on the census, or children through GRO.  She would have been 17 at the time of her marriage.
Mary Ann's relatives are all accounted for now, so I know she wasn't with them, or at least not recorded as with them.
Are there any army records that I could try?
Thanks.

Hi there

If William's regiment was the 87th (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot, he seems to have been with it in Malta in 1871 per the Army list in which he appears as Private Wm Entwistle, service no. 1066.

Have you traced the regiment's movements later?

Was he Irish I wonder?

Some info here about the regiment's movements:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/87th_(Royal_Irish_Fusiliers)_Regiment_of_Foot

The 1870s seem to have taken it to Nova Scotia, followed by Bermuda and later back to home barracks in Galway.

Thanks for the replies.

I hadn't got anywhere with the Nova Scotia/Bermuda link.

The 87th left for Halifax, Nova Scotia on 15 May 1872, but William was in Portsmouth on 28 October, getting married.  Would they all have gone, or some left behind?  It's a puzzle.

The Cambridge Barracks at Portsmouth was only a transit barracks, nothing to do with the 87th particularly.

What were the details given for William's father at the marriage? You might have some luck tracking down his side.

William's father was James Entwistle, a painter.  No luck looking for father and son together in 1851 or 1861, or 1871, when William would probably already have been in the army anyway.

The name Entwistle seems to centre around Lancashire, as far as England is concerned, but as William appears to have been in the 87th Regiment, based in Galway, he could be Irish?

Just bad luck that they're James, William and Mary!

Update

William's father wasn't James, a painter (that was a poor transcription on a church records website) - he was James Lever Entwistle, a PRINTER.

That has led me to James Lever Entwistle and Margaret Wolstenhulme (various spellings of this) as William's parents and his birth was registered in the June qtr 1846 at CHORLTON (birthplace on Census given as MANCHESTER).  He (or another relative of the same name) was a witness at his sister's marriage at Church, Lancashire, in November 1871.

After his marriage, as a soldier, to Mary Ann Groser in 1872 as detailed in my earlier post, I can't find either of them.

I wondered if this extra information might be enough for someone to hit on something?

As ever, very grateful for any suggestions.  Many thanks.

Update
Hello again.  I did buy that death certificate mentioned above - Mary Ann Entwistle died on 13 October 1879, aged 24, in the Winchester Union Workhouse of phthisis.

She is described as “Wife of David Entwistle, Private 3rd 60th Rifles”, so not Mary Ann Groser, who was WILLIAM Entwistle's wife?

BUT - there is no David Entwistle in British Army records of this time, and the only marriage of a Mary to a David Entwistle that would fit, that Mary is alive and well and having a son in 1880!  And she's Mary Jane Clowes/Cloues.

As the death was registered by the workhouse "Master", Stephen Hobbs, could this be a mistake on his part, and it is Mary Ann, wife of William?
