I just have information from the index , not the certificate itself.

Then order a certificate from GRO (https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp) or from the registration office in the district in which the birth was registered. You will then know if there was an adoption, and having the exact date of birth will help to narrow down potential death registrations (if the name was changed).

Have your parents ever approached the social authorities for information about him?

Where were you looking for his death - freebmd or another source?

Is the name a particularly common one?

I'm sure a few of us could have a go at looking if you are happy for us to know the name, the date and place of birth (the latter can simply be the information on the birth index). No promises, but a few people here do have eagle eyes and bendy minds.
