« on: Saturday 30 December 17 16:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi i am trying to find who used to live in my son in laws cottage through the census. I have tried without any success. It has been there for at least 200yrs. Its called Whitbank, Maydencroft Lane, Gosmore, Herts. It could have been called something else in the early days.
Any info very welcome. I have no names of who lived their previously.

Here's a ca 1900 OS map:
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=14&lat=51.9327&lon=-0.2785&layers=1&b=1

but sadly no house names on the 25 in to the mile map:

Have you tried looking at the 1939 register on Findmypast? If not named as Whytbank then you will be able to see the sequence of names, some will still be the same & you can see the name in 1939.

Do you know who your son-in-law bought the cottage from? If he has the Land Title number he can request previous transfers from the Land Register [a fee is payable for each transfer]. It may have been rented out before that of course so occupants need not have been owners. .

ADDED: 1901 census does not have house names in Maydencroft Lane RG13 piece 1300 fol 39

Whytbank [Yair] is the name of an estate in Scotland near Galashiels. The cottage may have been renamed by someone with a Scottish connection.

Is there a local history society who could help? Or library archive in Hitchin? Or long term residents nearby who may remember any previous names for the cottage?

Hi the only attempt to locate a Maydencroft Lane in Hertfordshire led me to a 1911 MAIDENCROFT Lane in the parish of Ipollitts, Hitchin?

Using the 1939 for Maidencroft Lane Hitchin only shows two named properties Ripley & Vine Cottages, others have just numbers or none at all.

Maidencroft Farm (Ippollitts) is named on the 1891 Census - but no mention of Maiden/Maydencroft Lane, let alone Whitbank Cottage.

From what I can see in 1881/91 the area around Maidencroft Farm was just called Gosmore or Gosmore Village?

In 1901 it has been transcribed as Maiden Croft Lane RG13/1300/39/8
