George Phillips, Ironmonger of Bishopsgate.
« on: Sunday 31 December 17 06:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello Roots Chatters,

Looking for any references whatsoever to a George Phillips, Ironmonger of Bishopsgate.  He was recorded as the brother in law of convict William Taylor who was transported to Tasmania in 1828.

Have found in newspapers a reference that he was opposite Bishopsgate Church in 1830 and in 1832 a reference to him being bankrupt.

Sadly, I have no other information to share.

Any and all miracles welcome, with thanks!

Happy New Year to you all.

Erin.

Welcome to RootsChat  ;D

Later reports mention him living at Bishopsgate St  so I wonder if this could be the family in 1841 living at Bishopsgate Street, St Botolph Without Bishopsgate, East London

And in 1861 I think George listed as a locksmith https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2ML-MZFX   On the image Camilla is listed as a British Subject born Zurich, Switzerland

From directories:

1825 Pigots: Geo Philips ironmonger and brazier, 13 Camomile Street, Bishopsgate

He's not listed in 1822 or 1839 editions

In Kent's directory for 1823, the ironmonger at 13 Camomile Street is John Phillips.

I note in passing that the Tasmanian convict record simply says "Bro in law an ironmonger named Phillips opp the church in Bishopsgate Street". No first name given.

Happy New Year and thank you to you all for the wonderful replies.  You have provided me with more information in a couple of hours than I have been able to locate in weeks.  You have certainly given me a bit to follow up on.

Erin.

From the directory information provided by ShaunJ, I have located another reference to Phillips in Camomile Street.

Phillips & Son, Whitesmiths, 13, Camomile-str.
http://www.londonancestor.com/kents/kents-p.htm
"Directory of London and Westminster, & Borough of Southwark.  1794."  I don't know London at all, but do you feel that this would be the same family?

Look forward to your opinions, with thanks.
Erin.
