WALSALL - Samuel Wilkes
« on: Sunday 31 December 17 09:39 GMT (UK) »
Looking for a baptism and/or burial record for my 2 x g. grandfather Samuel Wilkes, born abt. 1863/4 to parents Abraham & Elizabeth Wilkes.  There is a death entry in the GRO for Dec qtr 1899 but haven't found a burial record as yet.
The family lived in the Wednesbury area in the parish of St Johns but have been found in St Bartholomew's parish records too.

There is a baptism for a Samuel George Wilkes 18 October 1863 at St Bartholomew, Wednesbury, parents Edward and Sarah Anne. Could this be your man?

Thank you.  I've found some of his siblings baptised at St James, Wednesbury, but not Samuel so far.  His parents were Abraham and Elizabeth.  Abraham was a Shingler by trade.  Samuel's wife moves up to Yorkshire by 1900 with her children, where she remarries, so it is looking very likely the Dec. Qtr. 1899 record will be the right one.  Samuel has been recorded on census records with birth year est. 1866 and the 1891 census shows him as James Wilkes!  Marriage certificate gives his age as 20, in 1884.

Abraham Wilkes and Elizabeth Dunn appear on the same page - Marriages - West Bromwich District - September quarter 1858
4 July 1858 - Wednesbury - by Banns
Abraham Wilkes (x), 19, bachelor, Shingler.  Father:  Abraham, Miner
Elizabeth Dunn (x), 19, spinster.  Father:  Francis, Farmer

Using GRO new facility - Samuel Wilkes - June quarter 1865 - West Bromwich District - mmn Dunn

I haven't looked for all, but these also appeared:

Abraham - March quarter 1862 - baptised 18 February 1862
John - December quarter 1863
William - December quarter 1866

Mary Ann - baptised 16 February 1870
Eliza - baptised 17 June 1871
Alice - baptised 18 July 1872

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you for taking the time to look. It is specifically their son, Samuel's baptism and/or burial record I am looking for.  Abraham Wilkes married Elizabeth Dunn on 4 Jul 1858 at St Johns, Wednesbury.  I have baptism records for most of their other children apart from Samuel and his brother John.
