thanks, confused myself yesterday/last year with the Vol/page being the same. Of course it can be. For some reason I got it into my head that the Vol was the Book of pages when it is not the Quarter is the Book of pages. I had been thinking how can they be on the same page when each row on each page (of each Sub-District of Preston https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/preston.html) is normally filled in by date as peoople walk through the door, not alphabetically.

the stats are confusing on https://www.freebmd.org.uk/DistrictInfo.html when viewed by District but by year and quarter clarified things.

Page Ranges
Within each Volume there are pages and a range of page numbers is associated with each district.
We have extracted the page ranges for each volume. Look here for an index by event type and year, or here for an index by District.

thus for the Districts of
1856 Sep   8e   1-78      Rochdale
1856 Sep   8e   79-140   Haslingden
1856 Sep   8e   other districts
1856 Sep   8e   375-466   Preston

1856 Dec   8e   1-73      Rochdale
1856 Dec   8e   75-132   Haslingden
1856 Dec   8e   others
1856 Dec   8e   357-452   Preston

1857 Mar   8e   1-78      Rochdale
1857 Mar   8e   79-146   Haslingden
1857 Mar   8e   others
1857 Mar   8e   399-501   Preston

so it is pure co-incidence that a Gibson appears on page 434 6 months apart as you suggest

I still have a gut feeling that the Ellen with mother McMahon is her and just going by FreeBMD without that new info one would just eg order it. Only way to find out would be to £.

Cheers & HNY
John

As the first child was born in Ireland (where Births didn't have to be registered until 1864) perhaps the parents didn't know that they were supposed to Register Ellen/Catherine?
