Burial in Goole?
« on: Monday 01 January 18 00:41 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone can help me with the burial place of my GGG Grandmother.

She died on 11 Mar 1899 in the Union Workhouse, Goole. Name: Margaret Rogers, née Carr.

I don't really know where to look, having tried all the online sites. I live in SE London so it is hard to do archives etc. Happy to swap lookups etc if I can help someone else.

Hi

As I understand it, most people who died in a workhouse are buried in unmarked graves unless the body was claimed by a relative for burial elsewhere.

The only cemetery that I know of is in Hook Road, Goole.

 http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Goole/ This gives details of the workhouse, though you may already know this.

One of my paternal 3 x g.grandfathers died in a workhouse and was buried at the workhouse in Shipmeadow, Suffolk, I guess that means there was a burial area.  On the other hand my one of my maternal 3 x g.grandmothers who also died in the workhouse in Halesworth, Suffolk was buried in the local church, although the grave is unmarked.  I guess her son claimed her body but as he was poor he wouldn't have been able to afford a gravestone.

Hi scatchardfamily, on the off chance that there is a MI or a plot visible, give me a shout and I will get a photograph if you wish, its only a short distance down the motorway from me.

Hello @Pinetree and @jess5athome - I'm so sorry, I have only just seen your replies! Thank you so much!

@Pinetree - where did you see the register?

@jess5athorne - how would I know whether there's a plot?
