Passenger list George Frederick Long arrived Victoria C1866
« on: Monday 01 January 18 07:00 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information concerning George Frederick Long bC1828 Kildare d1893 Malvern Victoria  s/o Robert Long( militia captain/perhaps a shopkeeper ) and Sarah Hills.
I have his death registration which reveals the following:
He was an accountant.
27 years in Vic. so assume arrived c1866.
He was widowed Ireland. Some children may have been with him.Seven born Ireland.
Remarried Sandhurst Victoria 1872 Rosette Lavinia Wilson.
Four more children , first born 1874.
He was buried St Kilda Cemetery as were other family including his wife.

I think George might have been the brother of my maternal GGGrandmother Margaret Maria ( Long) Hendy who came here 1855 on "Constance".

I cannot find a passenger list for George Frederick Long.

Any snippet of information would be helpful. :D

When was he last mentioned in Ireland as he might have come via NSW or Queensland?

BTW I'm not sure if it is important but his his POB is listed as Dublin (and not Kildare) at the time of his marriage. Nowadays 60km isn't very far, but this was 150 odd years ago.

His first wife died on 27 Feb 1866 at Banbridge, Co Down, Ireland  So that places him in Ireland then.

Great, so there is a fairly big chance that he went directly to Victoria

It is a pity that the 1866 Suffolk immigration was already known as a possibility:

Thank you TreeSpirit and Cando.
Most of my information including names of children from first marriage and place of birth were gleaned from his Victorian death registration 1893. I have a copy.
I had discounted "Suffolk" as others with him do not match known family.

Assuming he was still in Ireland 1866 , might there have been a census which would help identify the family?

The link  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/175179812 gives an insight as to family members. Unaccounted children William , George , Sarah and James. They may not have travelled with him. :D

Firstly information on death certificates should be treated with caution especially the time in Aus.

George F surely was still in Ireland at the time of his wife's death.

I did wonder if perhaps he emigrated to the US first as one of his son's married there.

Have you traced the chn of his first marriage.

He was still in Ireland in 1865.  I assume this was his late mother in law.
