I acknowledge that the death registration of GFL could be misleading.
Also can't be sure that Mary Ann Carson was his mother in law.
His first wife Elizabeth "Lizzie" Jane Carson 1833-1866. Her death recorded as Carson despite having married Long 1853 Bainbridge.

As mentioned a son Sedgwick Rae Long 1856-1894 a bookkeeper went to New York.
1880 U.S. Census shows him living West 16 Street New York. A brother William may have been with him. Difficult to read.
Sedgwick married NY Annie Cassie Ward 15 Aug 1887. He died 1894.

Nothing to indicate GFL went to U.S.

I think it is me causing the confusion.
George Frederick Long died Malvern Victoria 29 Dec 1893 Reg. No.1069.
I was agreeing with your contention that I should not rely on all of the detail being correct.
The informant may not have had access to accurate information.

Thanks for the Belfast Newsletter death notice relating to his first wife.
It infers that he was still in Ireland Feb 1866.

I also agree that the town is Banbridge not Bainbridge.

You stated that Lizzie's death was registered under CARSON but it wasn't.

There is a death for a James CARSON in 1854 and Mary Anne CARSON was described as a widow in 1865 with George Frederick LONG being described in another resource as the prime beneficiary.

With records being destroyed in Ireland you may have a problem proving positively any of your research.  You need to use various resources and at times make some careful assumptions with appropriate notations in your files.

If George F emigrated to the US prior to arriving in Aus then that may be one of the reasons you haven't found his arrival.  I can't recall all the details of the 1852 shipping act but I think the recording of passengers was on ships which travelled between colonial ports even though the journey may have commenced in a foreign port.  Hope that makes sense.  My ancestors had worked as mining surveyors in California during the gold rush and to date I have not found their arrival in Aus even though there was an announcement in the Vic papers that they had arrived.  Personal message to their sister, my gggrandmother in the Argus.

Another thought.  If Robert LONG was a captain in the militia, George F may have been born anywhere.  My OH's gggrandfather was born in England to an Irish father and English mother as the father was in the 77th Regiment. A further seven children were born in Dublin after the family returned to Ireland.

I agree his first wife was buried as Long.
Also I suppose it is feasible that he came to Australia via US.
As you say if his father was in the militia he might have been born anywhere.

As an aside a brother of my great grandfather from St Austell Cornwall did a stint in California before returning to marry and become an innkeeper in St Austell.He must have found some gold.
