Anna Louisa Saur
« on: Monday 01 January 18 14:04 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information about Anna Louisa Saur of St James Piccadilly who married Charles Marie Benoit de St Bel in 1788. She became known as Mrs. Sainbel (an alternative spelling), and was widowed when Charles who was a French immigrant died suddenly in August 1793. Charles St Bel was the founder and first Professor of the Royal Veterinary College and was living at 36 Little St. Martin's Street, Leicester Square by 1790. Anna was said to be a lady of some status. Her surname seems to be Austrian or Swedish.

Any help greatly appreciated.
Andrew.

She signed the marriage register as A. L. Sauer. One of the witnesses was Henry Sauer. Have you tried looking for him?

No I haven't. I found her through findmypast and the register spelled her as Saur. Thank you for this. Where would I find a copy of the register itself?
I'll try looking for him.
Andrew.

Sorry, I had seen that, I just missed the bit lower down!
Henry Sauer on FindMyPast lived in Great Jermyn street from 1764 right through to the 1830s, so I ought perhaps be able to trace his occupation, assuming he is her father.

The Dictionary of National Biography, has Charles Vial De Sainbel or Saint Bel born Lyons France 1753
came to England 1788 died 1793.
---his accomplishments in France
Professor at the Veterinary College of London 1791

According to the marriage bond, he was 36 when they married and she was 21, both of St James Westminster.

Thank you for this. I have obtained a copy of the marriage bond from LMA but I don't see any indication of their ages, although 36 would be correct for Charles (b.1753). Have I missed the age for Anna somewhere?

There are 2 images on ancestry both for the marriage, the first appears to a sheet of paper
indexed (on ancestry as a BOND) as Benoit Charles Marie De Saint and Anna Louisa Saner. Ref DL/A/D/24/MS10091E/101/1
This is the one you were given.

**The other is a page in a book this is the one you want, indexed as Benoit Charles Marie De Saint Bel.
Ref: MS10091/159
**Indexed on ancestry as an ALLEGATION
It reads Benoit Charles Marie De Saint Bel of the parish St James Westminster in the County of Middlesex batchelor  aged 36 years and upwards, intends to marry Anna Louisa Sauer of the same parish spinster aged 21 years and upwards.

Spelling as in document.

Both are dated 2 July 1788
