Mary Parker - Southport resident as at Aug 1864 - Any help appreciated.
« on: Monday 01 January 18 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

My first post on here so please be gentle with me if I get anything wrong!

I'm trying to find more information on Mary Parker who was married to William Hodge on 27.08.1864 at St James Parish Church, Birkdale, North Meols.  The marriage certificate states she was 23 and her father was Wm Parker, a Grocer.  It doesn't state whether he was deceased or not.

I've tried searching GRO index, Ancestry.co.uk, Findmypast for her birth (in Census from 1871 it states she was born Manchester).  I've tried the Lancashire Online Parish Records but can't trace her birth.

I have traced a marriage of a Wm Parker (Grocer) in 1835 but not sure how I can link this to Mary as I haven't traced her in the Census 1861 and before (before her marriage).

I've got a copy of her death certificate in 1907 but no reference other than to her husband.

If I can track her birth at least I'll know her parents but I'm at a loss.  Any help/bright ideas welcomed  :)

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Info re: fathers on a marriage cert wasn't always "honest".  Many illegitimate children made up a fathers name when marrying to appear "respectable"

I'm not saying that is the case here - just something to bear in mind

Were either of the marriage witnesses surname Parker?

Hi Carole

The witnesses were a James Buck and William Bradshaw and don't feature anywhere in any research so far.  It does say after Banns but I can't find a record of those either.

I guess if Mary made the father's name up I'll be stumped.

I've tried looking in directories but can't find a grocer in Southport named Wm Parker but then I guess he could be in Manchester and that could be anywhere!

Thanks

Karen

The 1835 marriage you mention was to Ann Brown but GRO online does not show a Mary Parker birth in Manchester with a mmn of Brown

However - failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874 so it's possible her birth was not registered

Is your Mary the one living in Lytham St Anne's?

Hi Gibel

Yes - she is the one in LSA

I have a longshot but can't find an 1851 or 1861 entry to confirm

The 1835 marriage between William Parker - grocer - and Ann Brown refers

William died before 1845 - 2 possibilities March qtr 1839 aged 38 or Dec qtr 1844 aged 46 both Manchester RD

Ann Parker nee Brown re-married 1845 at Manchester Cathedral to Ralph Hindley bachelor - occ mechanic - and that's where my trail goes cold
