William, philadelphe and Mary are in Liverpool in the 1851, in cazneau street, William is described as a porter, living in cazneau st. which was the home of Liverpool’s wholesale fruit and veg market, there is a tenuous connection there to greengrocery.

Well I did say it was a long shot, but it would not be the first time a fathers occupation has been enhanced, and there is a long tradition of young women from Liverpool working in hotels in Southport

I saw that entry too and Liverpool is not that far from Southport.  It was William's occ that put me off but you never know

Wish I could find Ann & Ralph Hindley in 1851 but as a lot of the Manchester 1851 was water damaged who knows??

Gosh, thanks all for help.

I'm hoping to have a good look this weekend following your help. I've also contacted a member from ancestry.co.uk who is related to the William parker and Ann brown but has different children and not my Mary parker. I guess there's also the possibility of William and philadelphia so I'll see what I can establish.

I bet my ancestors are thinking I'm a right nosey parker  :D

Thanks all

I can't find them either - witness to marriage was a Catherine Hindley she made her mark

Is this Ralph on 1841 census with Catherine/a ?

Hi all

Thanks very much for all your help.

I've been delving deeper and think I may have cracked it!  The marriage entry for William and Philadelphia states he is a grocer.  So with the LDS record from Blue (thanks Blue) that shows Mary with parents William and Philadelphia.

Then looking at census returns:
1851 Census shows William, Philadelphia with Mary and siblings at Liverpool
1861 Census shows William and Phil at Ardwick and Mary at a separate address in Ardwick as a servant.
1864 marriage certificate for William Hodge and Mary Parker states Mary as servant

So I think it must be William and Philadelphia as parents.  I'm going to search for their death entries now but wanted to update you all and thank you for your help and guidance.

Thanks

Karen
