Change of name - twice! Why ???
« on: Monday 01 January 18 17:03 GMT (UK) »
My g/g/grandfather seems to have changed his name twice between censuses.

1891 George Henry Davenport, Cirencester, Registrar
1901 Albert G Bromley, Swindon, House Painter
1911 Victor George Bromley, Swindon, House Decorator

The date/place of birth is consistent, as is the spouse and all the children, although they also become Bromley.  I have found details of death, reverting to original name of G H Davenport.

Due to the change in profession, I am wondering if there was something untoward that led to a name change being necessary.  Would it have been common practice to change a family's name?  I guess at a push Albert to Victor could be poor recording on the census.

Any ideas?  Thanks

Thank you so much Rosie - looks like that could be the reason for the name change then.  Now I'm curious as to the reason!

Gloucestershire Chronicle 02 December 1893 also has a notice to the same effect by order of the Chief Clerk at the GRO, Somerset House.

It must have been something bad to be dismissed.  :-\
