Can't find death for George McMillan born 1828
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 00:33 GMT (UK) »
For the longest time, the exact date of death for my 3x great grandfather, George McMillan, has evaded me.

Here is what I do know:

He was born on 12 Aug 1828 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire to parents George McMillan and Agnes McNabb.

Is baptised on 24 Aug 1828 in Muirkirk.

Appears in the 1851 census living at 4 East Rose, Glasgow with his older brother Neil McMillan and his family.

Marries Dorothy Gray on 14 Jul 1854 in Glasgow.

Appears in the 1861 census living at 12 Whitehall Street, Anderston, Glasgow, with his wife Dorothy and son George McMillan.

Has a son, Robert Gray McMillan, born on 18 Apr 1864 at 64 Parliamentary Road, Glasgow.

On 22 Oct 1866, his wife Dorothy remarries to James Littlejohn. She is noted as a widow.

The evidence suggests that he died in either 1864, 1865 or 1866, but I can't find a suitable death record on ScotlandsPeople in those years.

I'm thinking he either died in a different country than Scotland, or there is something else going on and Dorothy actually wasn't a widow when she remarried (perhaps George abandoned the marriage?).

On Scotlands People, under Wills, there is an Inventory for a George McMillan, dated 4 Oct 1873 for Newlands, parish of Kilmaurs,  Ayrshire.          It costs 10 credits to open the record and it might not be him!

Perhaps you could try the 1871 census on Ancestry to see if a George McMillan was living there in 1871.
