There are 2 x Arthur James WALLACEs in the 1928 Tasman electoral roll. One at Bainham, a motor driver, who I guess is the son, and one at Inangahua Junction, a labourer.

Thanks folk for taking the time to unravel aspects of Arthur James Wallace.  Interesting re the Electoral rolls. Will work on this for a day or so.

Hi Barrie Green

... firstly just wanted to mention, that caution should be exercised when using info extracted from electoral rolls / local directories, etc.    ;)   That is not to say that these rolls do not have a place (esp. if used in conjunction with other info) but you do need to be aware that because the rolls were published only in the lead-up to general elections (every 3 years), some information may be out-of-date.   It is also important to check for "persons removed from rolls" (using the registration  number allocated to them) - this listing usually follows the supplementary roll(s) for the particular electorate.

As to Arthur James WALLACE senior (b. 1903), my guess is that he "departed the scene" well before 1928
Edited :    Sorry, my error, "(b. 1903)" should not have appeared in conjunction with  Arthur James WALLACE senior -  who was of course born in. 1877.   :-[

Incidentally, the 1928 info above ^ comes from the Motueka electoral roll (Tasman is the Province / Region).
[**   Explanation of this listing, to follow. ]

On further checking of earlier Motueka rolls, it can be seen that in 1919,  Arthur James WALLACE is a farmer residing at Bainham (along with his wife Maria Maude).

Again, same listing on 1922 Motueka roll.  However, this time - using his registration number 4911 - I checked the "Removals from main and supplementary rolls"  which showed that # 4911 had been removed since the last roll (supplementary) closed on 18 October 1922.

Motueka electoral roll for 1925 :

WALLACE - Maria Maude - married*  /  Arthur James - motor driver / Martin Lewis - farmer
... all residing at  Bonnie Doon, Bainham.

[*   Provision was made for "changes of names / addresses / occupations etc." on the rolls but people did not always take advantage of making those alterations.   The 1925 election was also the first in which Arthur junior was eligible to vote. ]

**  1928 - Tasman - Motueka electoral roll :

I believe that the  " 2 x Arthur James WALLACE" listings numbered 7216 and 7217, are for the same person.
Removed from that roll at 19 October 1928, the listing for # 7217 (AJW - Labourer at Inangahua).

Edited to add 1931 Motueka roll shows Arthur James WALLACE at Bainham - motor driver :

"As to Arthur James WALLACE senior (b. 1903), my guess is that he "departed the scene" well before 1928. " The senior Arthur James was born in 1877, Lu - junior was born 1903. It is also possible that the removal from the 1928 roll was for Arthur James senior.

Well yes  ... BUT ... where was Arthur James WALLACE senior in 1925 ??

Why ... if it was Arthur James "senior" on that 1928 roll ... was he removed from 1928 roll ??

Why do you think Arthur James "senior" might have suddenly reappeared in 1928 and just as quickly, disappeared  ???

Could Arthur James the senior have been in prison?

I've checked the Police Gazette indexes for 1924 - 1928, and released prisoners in 1927 and 1928. No Arthur James.

My error  :-[  John - thanks for the correction   :):   Re:  Arthur James WALLACE senior (b. 1903) --  "(b. 1903)"  should not have appeared - A J WALLACE senior was of course born in 1877.

It would appear that Arthur James may have dropped the use of his first Christian name to be known just as James WALLACE..........

[See page 1 of his war file.]

Obviously that is the wife of Arthur James WALLACE, remarrying in 1927.

Have scoured the newspapers of the day - found no mention of A J WALLACE (or his wife).   He didn't appear to say, have debts;  he wasn't being sought by his wife / family;   no apparent scandal ... etc ??

And the 1926 divorce ... nothing mentioned in the newspapers ... or Court Lists etc. ??

*  Maybe Arthur and wife had a separation agreement .... and the later divorce passed quietly through the Court process ?

And he died at Nelson in 1955 - aged 78.
