Looking for first marriage of James Dickson
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 13:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello and a Happy New Year to everyone!
I am trying to find information on the first marriage of my husband's paternal grandfather James Dickson. The information I have is as follows:-
He was born at Sinsharnie, Cairney, Aberdeenshire on 27 June 1867.
He married MaryAnn Milne On 6 June 1906 at Mains of Findochty, and is shown on the marriage certificate as a widower.
The 1901 Census for the parish of Rathven shows him at 9 Cluny Square, Buckie where he was also described as a widower.
I have no knowledge of his first wife's name & therefore cannot find any trace of his first marriage. Can anyone help please? Thank you.

Watson - Banchory Ternan, Old Machar
Pirie - Slains, New Deer, Old Deer
Gerrie - Aberdeen
Thom(p)son - Caithness

Do you have him on the 1871, 1881 & 1891 censuses?

Who is named as his parents on his second marriage certificate [or do you have his birth certificate as you have an exact date of birth]?

ADDED: 1901  Rathven; ED: 5; Page: 2; Line: 8
shows brother Arthur & sister Jane
Arthur Dickson   27
James Dickson   33
Jane Dickson   34
all born Cairnie

This seems to be the 1881 Cairnie; ED: 1; Page: 4; Line: 4; Roll: cssct1881_56 though the age for Jane is a bit awry
John Dickson   43
Ann Dickson   42
John Dickson   15
James Dickson   13
William Dickson   12
Jane Dickson   10
George Dickson   9
Arthur Dickson   7
Alexander Dickson   2
Ann Wilson   17
Elisabeth Ettles   16
James Christie   40
Peter McLachlan   22
so he must have married & been widowed between 1881 & 1901

Having a job finding him in 1891 census. I note in 1901 he was a butcher. I wonder where he did his apprenticeship.

OK that's interesting to have an occupation. an ancestry tree gives a date of death as 1939, wonder if he left a will? Only have access to ancestry, not SP.

But it's surprising, Sandra, how lateral information can lead to a breakthrough - hence my own posts.

flst, his father was a farmer of 125 acres, so perhaps he learned his trade at home?

Interesting that the newspaper articles on Sandra's link only start in 1906, so perhaps he was living away when he was married first time?

ADDED: Anyone have access to valuation rolls for Aberdeen/Moray in the 1890s? Might show where he was living/working.

;D ;D the people we are looking for rarely have middle names. His mother's maiden name was George [from baptism on ANCESTRY]
