Given that his father was not a butcher I think it highly unlikely that he learned the trade at home.:)

OK thanks, looked at the valuation roll free indexes but didn't see anything likely for him or Arthur [who was also a butcher on the 1901]. It would be so good to find where James was living in 1891l

Some farmers do butcher - our local farmer takes his animals to a local abattoir then brings the carcasses home to butcher.  But it's not common so it would be lovely to find James as an apprentice somewhere.

His brother John was also a butcher, in Banff. His sister Jane lived with him. Their father was visiting them in the 1891 census (which explains why he wasn't at home on the farm with his wife.)

Do you have him on the 1871, 1881 & 1891 censuses?

Who is named as his parents on his second marriage certificate [or do you have his birth certificate as you have an exact date of birth]?

ADDED: 1901  Rathven; ED: 5; Page: 2; Line: 8
shows brother Arthur & sister Jane
Arthur Dickson   27
James Dickson   33
Jane Dickson   34
all born Cairnie

This seems to be the 1881 Cairnie; ED: 1; Page: 4; Line: 4; Roll: cssct1881_56 though the age for Jane is a bit awry
John Dickson   43
Ann Dickson   42
John Dickson   15
James Dickson   13
William Dickson   12
Jane Dickson   10
George Dickson   9
Arthur Dickson   7
Alexander Dickson   2
Ann Wilson   17
Elisabeth Ettles   16
James Christie   40
Peter McLachlan   22
so he must have married & been widowed between 1881 & 1901
Hello Josey,
Yes on the 1871 and 1881 Censuses, but not traceable on 1891 Census, by which time he was probably married and living elsewhere.

We have his birth certificate D.O.B. 27/6/1867 at Sinsharnie, Cairnie.  Parents John Dickson and Ann Dickson m.s. George.

Thanks for you help, will keep digging!

Hello Fist,
thanks for your link to the 1891 Census for Banff confirming what you say, but brother James not shown as a visitor.

The mystery continues, but thanks for your help.

I never said brother James was visiting. It was the father who was visiting!

OK that's interesting to have an occupation. an ancestry tree gives a date of death as 1939, wonder if he left a will? Only have access to ancestry, not SP.
Everyone has access to SP.

See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I patently put in in a grammatically incorrect way  :-[. I meant that I didn't have credits to pay for the results of free index searches on SP for other people.
