Burial of John Brown Parish of Ayr
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 22:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I have found the death record of a possible ancestor but cannot find the grave:
John Brown, died  5 April 1852 in Wallacetown (buried 7 April 1852), OPR parish 578 Ayr (aged 73).

I have copies of monumental inscriptions for St Quivox, 6 Kyle Graveyards (Culzean,Fairfield,Coodham, St Margarets, Newton-on-Ayr and Barnwell), Newton Green, Ayr Auld Kirk, Wallacetown,Alloway and Secessionist Graveyard Ayr -  I received them from the Ayrshire Family History Society. But none of these have a record of this death.

(In the 1841 and 1851 census John Brown was living in Wallacestown and was listed as having been born in Ayr, Ayrshire. He had been a sea navy pilot. )

Any advice on how to proceed would be gratefully received.
Regards.

Are there any relevant graveyards on this list missing from yours?

Is this the John Brown that you are looking for?  St Vigeans Churchyard and Cemetery.  Theres a phot of the gravestone on deceasedonline.

Erected by Jean Samson to the memory of her late husband JOHN BROWN who departed this life 4.4.1852 aged 44y. Also his widow Jean Samson d. 1.1.1854 aged 50y. Also their grandson William Samson Peat d. 1861 aged 1y & 6m. Also Agnes BROWN daughter of the above and wife of JOHN Peat, Master Mariner d. 21.11.1881 aged 50y

Just realised a couple of days difference in death dates sorry.

There might not have been a gravestone, or the stone might not have survived. Did his wife outlive him? If so, for a few years from 1855 the place of burial is recorded on the death certificate. Perhaps there might be a funeral notice in the local paper. The Advertiser, if my memory serves me right, carried them from quite an early period.

Have you tried Bereavement Services for the area? If you can give as much information as possible they are extremely helpful. Incidentally, I too have Brown's on both sides of my family tree (father and maternal grandmother) although not related.  My Brown's are from Newmilns and Galston
