Can't find family on census in East London
« on: Wednesday 03 January 18 10:17 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the family of Jessie Mills b 1878 in Whitechapel. A search on GRO suggests her mother's maiden name is Bray.

She married George Herbert Gaff in Poplar in 1900 and from the banns I can find the following:

Marriage Date: 02/12/1900
Father: George Mills (Occupation: Barman)
Spouse: George Herbert Gaff
Witnesses: George Mills, Florence Mills (wife? sister?)

However I can't find Jessie and her father George Mills on any census (e.g. 1881, 1891). A census result for this family would be great as I would be able too see where the parents were born and how long they'd been married. The only George Mills marrying a Bray I can find is George Partridge Mills and it can't be him because he died in 1894.

Any suggestions would be great please.

You are right about the marriage

Marriage June qtr 1874
Bray    Jane
MILLS  George Partridge
Pancras    1b   34

I assume that you are discounting him because Jessies marriage does not mention he has died.  This is a question that would not normally be asked when the couple married, they would just be asked their fathers names and occupations

ADDED the marriage image is online.  The witnesses were Florence Mills and George Mills, presumably her brother & sister

Thank you both this is a great help

I am particularly interested in this connection because George and Jessie's daughter married a man whose mother was also called Bray, so I'd like to see if they were related and how the families might have known each other through where they lived or worked.

I had discounted him because I assumed the George Mills as witness to the 1900 marriage was Jessie's father, and hadn't thought it might be her brother.

Interestingly the fathers in the 1874 marriage are both noted as being deceased, but good to know this isn't often noted.

Just for info Susannah may have died before 1891.  There is a death in Dec 1884 of a 4 year old Susannah Elizabeth Mills.
