Thanks again for all your suggestions.  Still not managed to tie up with a real place name but I'll keep looking.

Worth remembering that parish registers were often written up from rough day-books, or even slips of paper, and there may be copying errors in the registers that we see.

The place-name clearly ends -stead. The Genuki pages for towns and parishes in Herefordshire and Hertfordshire show that -stead is a far more common ending in Hertfordshire than in Herefordshire.

There seem to be quite a few Ireland families in Hertfordshire. Thinking a long way outside the box, could it be a mis-copying of an abbreviated form of Berkhamste(a)d?

Had just done the same thing, Bookbox, and came to the same possible conclusion - abbreviation of Berkhamstead /B'amstead  :)

Banstead was my initial thought. I suppose he could have been a southerner and said Barnstead  ;D

That's another contender, thanks to all who've posted since my last check in.
I've been down the old maps route and everything. At least I can bear these places in mind when searching  :)
Much appreciated!
