Romany Boswell Stockport
« on: Wednesday 03 January 18 19:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm new to this so forgive me if I'm asking silly questions.

My great great grandmother was Susanna Boswell, daughter of John S Boswell.

I am wondering if anyone has any pictures/ names of the Boswell's that travelled around Staffordshire & Cheshire in the 1800's and settled in Stockport in the late 1800's/Early 1900's.

My grandad mentioned a yard that his father told him about from when he was a boy. My great grandad was John Renshaw but the story is that his grandad (John S Boswell) took him on and he was known as Sonny Boswell.

Also I can't find any brothers and sisters for Susanna (Suzie) or a wife for John on ancestry. One woman does come up but when I visited Suzies grave it couldn't be the mother that I had on my tree. Has anyone else got John or Suzie on their trees?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, it really would help us to help you if you give some indication of the approx year of birth of Susannah, and who did John S Boswell marry to have a daughter Susannah ( See you cannot locate one), and approx yob for John Renshaw?

I can see a family in 1901 Stockport with Father George 46 occ Rag & Bone Dealer with wife Susannah 39 and children including a John S aged 11 b Congleton?
Census ref RG13/3286/47/5

PS I can locate a marriage in December 1927 Stockport of a Thomas Renshaw to a Susannah Boswell?

Might as well stick to it - this is the only Sonny showing:
Sonny Boswell died age 65 in 2006 in Kent, born on 14th October 1941, so unlikely to be the correct one.
(Just checking in case he really was registered at death as Sonny.)

Have you looked in 'Surname Interests' under 'Your Tools' below, to see if anyone else is researching your family?

There is a marriage for a John Boswell 21,to Elizabeth Davenport 22, 29 Nov 1909 at Heaton Norris Christ Church. It doesn't mention his middle name but he was a hawker, father's name George also a hawker and witnesses were Samson Boswell and I think the other one is Leminder Boswell.
John and Elizabeth had a daughter Susannah born 1910/11.
I was going to say that the 1911 census would make it a bit clearer but I'm not sure that it does and I could be completely wrong. There seems to be two records, one for John Boswell and another for John S Boswell which is confusing me because I think they could be the same person. ::)

I helped a 'Boswell' a while ago.  He had been told that there is 'a Gypsy King buried in Audenshaw' He had been told that hundreds of people carried the body from Salford to St Stephen's. These inscriptions are related to the Boswell family.

It's possible that Susannah Boswell and Thomas Renshaw are the parents of your John Renshaw.
Susannah and Thomas married 1927 Dec qtr. at Heaton Norris Christ Church.
There are a couple of birth records on Cheshirebmd for Renshaw with mother's name Boswell.
I won't print them as there is just a chance they may still be living.
