Need Help please with 1 Word in mid-1740's County Durham Will
« on: Thursday 04 January 18 01:01 GMT (UK) »
Dear all,

I am stuck on one word in this will. Here's what I have starting from the 4th word on line 1:

"together with the legacy due from the ______Society kept at
Mr. James Thompson, and also all my real and personal Estate of what kind"

I *think* that that Society was some sort of "Friendly Society" and that the "legacy" was sort of like life insurance, but being unable to decipher the name, I'm stymied at investigating further.

All help gratefully received.

Cheers,
Westoe

It looks like Boxsar doesn't it . . .  so I googled that and did come up with something - mostly Boxer, but lots of images coming up under Boxsar.  Seems it could have been something to do with the Boxer Society in China . . . also seems to cover Boxer dogs.  :-\

Could it be some alternative spelling for Boxers? - in the Boxer Society in China.  Bit before their time though maybe.

Could be wrong  - been known!    ;)

Also looked under Bonsor.   Various people but no Society until much later.

In which part of County Durham did this person live? There were so many Friendly Societies and lots of them were very localised.

I wondered if it could be a village but I'm not familiar with the area.

There's an account here http://www.british-history.ac.uk/no-series/newcastle-historical-account/pp546-568#h3-0017 of various charitable institutions in Newcastle and Gateshead. It's rather later than the date of your will.
But I notice that several of the 'Other Benefit Societies' and 'Women's Benefit Societies' are called the (something) Box, which makes me wonder if the word in question is Boxer  :-\
