I have an old oil painting done around 1900. It was very dirty after years of hanging in various homes where there were coal fire and smokers.
We took it to a local art restorer - this was in Cheshire - and he cleaned it up a good deal for us - it has to be done very carefully. The colours are more vibrant and a figure appeared which had not been visible before but it is still quite a crude painting of a sailing vessel and the paint is cracked in places.
