For reference:

84th Regiment = 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot
Became part of the York and Lancaster Regiment in 1881.

Lower Swell is in Gloucestershire.

If we assume that Thomas was in his 20s when he became a father, then he would be in his 60s or 70s during World War 1? :-\

I'm guessing this was just put here as Frank didn't know where else to put it and that he wouldn't have been in the army in WW1.  ;D

I've just seen what I presume is your tree on Ancestry, Frank? If he deserted about June/July that would fit with the date your great grandmother was born 9 months later. Perhaps when he was found he rejoined another regiment.

So it looks as if he deserted, was discharged and returned to Stowe, where the baby was conceived. I wonder if he did actually re-enlist, or whether that was a little white lie on his daughter’s birth certificate?
